Misbah ul Haq appointed as Pakistan’s chief selector, head coach

Former Pakistan captain Misbah ul Haq has been appointed as the head coach, chief selector of the Pakistan cricket team.

Misbah ul Haq will be assisted by Waqar Younis who is appointed as the bowling coach. Both the veterans will take care of the team for the next three years.

Both Misbah and Younis were picked by a five-member panel that included Intikhab Alam (former captain), Bazid Khan (former cricket), Asad Ali Khan (Member of the Board of Governors), Wasim Khan (Chief Executive, PCB) and Zakir Khan (Director – International Cricket).

Before being appointed as the coach, Misbah was a part of Pakistan selection committee that decided against renewing the contract for the then coach Mickey Arthur. Misbah resigned his job and applied for head coach.

Waqar Younis has coached the team multiple times, starting in 2006 where was first appointed as the bowling coach before stepping down in 2007. He also was appointed as the head coach during 2016 where he faced severe backlash.

Talking about the selection, Misbah said: “It is very humbling for me to join a select group of some of the very best to have coached the Pakistan national sides in the past. It is an honour and more than that, a massive responsibility as we live and breathe cricket. I know expectations are high, but I am absolutely ready and up for the task, otherwise I would not have thrown my name in the hat for one of the most challenging and coveted roles in Pakistan cricket.”

The first assignment for the duo will be the home series against Sri Lanka where the two sides will play three ODIs and three T20Is.

Considering the fact that Misbah is super fit even now, you might see him come out of the retirement to represent the country once again.
