Sadly, nothing has changed: Andrea about Me Too Movement, book launch controversy & more!

The multi-talented Andrea recently opened up about her relationship that faded years ago at her book launch. Recently, the actress opened up about the same to Times of India. Here is her interview part.

“That backfired pretty badly, I admit. Here is what happened. One of my friends, Anuja Chandramouli, was on the organising committee of the festival. She knows that I write. She asked me why don’t I show the writer side of myself. My writing is very personal to me. It’s my soul stripped down bare. They called me last year and I didn’t go. They called me again this year, and I decided to go because I figured the universe wanted me to do this. There were no media and there was only a bunch of writers. So, I forgot that I was an actor for a minute and let my guard down. Possibly, I shouldn’t have done that.

When you forget that you are an actor and you speak honestly about your life, it is taken out of context. It is reprinted and rehashed. The truth was simply that I read out a poem from the book and somebody asked me what the poem was about. I told them that it was about a very difficult relationship in my life. But that was a relationship from 10 years ago. Nobody latched onto to that point. The poem was written 10 years ago. It turned into its own Frankenstein sort of thing. I deliberately chose not to react to it. It was very hard and made me very angry. I was hurt because this was something very personal. I realised that this is what happens when people are honest about themselves. That is why we shut up and put up these guards. I did not react at all.

I am going to launch the book properly. I was going to launch it but went into a shell when all this happened. The book is not about a man. It is about me. It gives a glimpse of what I am off stage talking about my first heartbreak and my dreams.

I did not know how to react to it because it (the speculation) was very bizarre. How do you clarify something that is almost like fiction? I heard ‘actor-politician’ and I was like what? It was bizarre how they jumped to conclusions and arrived at this point.

I did not expect this at all. The poetry festival was a small, intimate gathering of people. I forgot that I was an actor. I did not respond to the backlash. This is the first interview I am doing. It was tough to sit and not react. I would like people to read the book and then come to their own conclusions.”

While talking about Me Too Movement, the actress said that nothing has changed in the industry however, now the women got the strength to talk back.

“I am very insulated in the film industry, to be honest. It sends some tremors. It is the step in the right direction. The fact that women have opened them up in the first place is a step in the right direction. Even then, sadly, nothing has changed. But the fact that women got the courage to open up will make a male predator at least think twice. The sense of responsibility needs to come from men.”

On the work front, Andrea will be seen in multiple projects- Kaa, Vattam, Maaligai and in Lokesh Kanagaraj’s next which also stars actor Vijay as the lead.
