Dil Bechara: An intense as well as emotional ride

Dil Bechara. This is more than just a film. It is all emotions. Maybe we would have seen it differently if Sushant was out there, smiling at us during all those promotional events while gasping all the sadness he was fighting. We would never know. Right now, the film is completely different and it makes you cry even more… If you are a Sushant Singh fan.

Most of us would have watched The Fault in Our Stars, would have read the book too. The story, of course, is all same but it gets the desi look and with AR Rahman’s music and Amitabh Bhattacharya’s words, the world gets better… Or makes you cry.

Manny(Sushant Singh) and Kizie(Sanjana Sanghi) have cancer and the way they both look at life is completely different. Kizie who carries the Oxygen cylinder everywhere shows the vulnerable side to life and she keeps thinking how life would be without the loved ones. She goes to funerals to see how people take deaths. Then we have Manny who is totally opposite to Kizie. He dances, smiles always and gives new meaning to life. He enjoys every moment and he says, “dream big”. He is a true-blue Rajinikanth fan.

Kizie and Manny bond together and share beautiful chemistry. Manny shows a new way to live life and gives hope to Kizie. They majorly bond through the lanes of Jamshedpur in his scooter which is captured brilliantly by Satyajit Pande who is another star who carries this film apart from the characters. They also shoot a Bhojpuri film for Manny’s best friend, Jagdish Pandey (Sahil Vaid), whose dream is to direct a film before losing his eyesight to cancer.

Kizie is in love with the songs by an independent artist Abhimanyu Vaid(Saif Ali Khan). Kizie has no clue why he left his last song incomplete. Manny jumps in, finds him for her and earns her parents permission to take her to meet him. Of course, Saif Ali Khan gives his best.

Sushant Singh has this infectious energy and a smile that right now can kill you. This story is already an emotional ride and with Sushant Singh playing the lead, it is really hard to fight the tears. Sushant easily gets into the skin of the character and as Manny, he hits another sixer.

Debut director Mukesh Chhabra has done a good job in making a story super likeable but the film does miss a few steps. There is a little drag here and there but AR Rahman jumps in to fill that tiny void. It is not all perfect but you don’t really have to care about it because it’s Sushant Singh’s one last ride.

While Sushant takes the whole review space, a lot of credits goes to other actors as well who equally pulled things off. Sanjana Sanghi is delightful in her debut and she brings her character’s vulnerability great on screens.

This film is a celebration of Sushant and his dreams. Even as Manny, he has dialogues that break your heart. Still, it is full of hope. Probably, this is the final message he wants to tell us all- “Janam kab lena hai aur marna kab hai yeh hum decide nehi kar sakte, lekin kaise jeena hai woh toh hum decide kar sakte hai”.

Dil Bechara will always have a special place in our hearts. It is like that song which is always on your playlist but you don’t want to revisit it because of the memories. In a similar way, this film certainly hurts more when you rewatch it.

Just like how Kizie wants to know why Abhimanyu’s song was incomplete, we, fans, certainly feel that way with Sushant’s life. It is a beautiful story that got over earlier than we expected. Incomplete.

For all Sushant Singh’s fans, Dil Bechara is for you. To celebrate life, hope, Manny and Sushant Singh.

From Manav to Manny. It’s been a wonderful journey. The curtains shouldn’t have fallen this early. He deserved more.

Farewell Sushant!
